GOOD Design has rules and I'm not talking about 'horizontal rules'. Yes, you can break them, but first you must know the rule that you are breaking.
If you don't have formal training in graphic design, but your employer has asked you to produce professional looking printed material, then the above book is a good place to start to learn the rules of Typography. Typography is one of the major building blocks of good graphic design and nothing makes a publication look more amatuerish than ALL CAPS, centered text and underlines. Except maybe using Comic Sans for your 'corporate correspondence'.

Elton John said he never tries to tell his writing partner Bernie how to write lyrics and Bernie doesn't tell him how to write the music. It's a good working relationship and shows the respect each has for the other's creative talent.
